- Guided Theme Tours: One hour tours, led by trained guides, cover a variety of historically significant events. Advanced reservations are required for the following tours:
- The Constitution and Bill of Rights
The Constitution contains the rules of government; in over 200 years, there have been only 27 formal amendments ratified. Who helped frame our original Constitution? Who was President when the income tax became legal? Women gained the right to vote? Citizenship was defined? What will be the next amendment’s topic?
- Protecting the Nation
The United States president is constitutionally the “Commander-in-Chief” of the nation’s armed forces. Find out how presidents have led the country during times of crisis. Which presidents have been war heroes? Which have used diplomatic skills to keep us out of war? Is military service a requirement for the presidency?
- Human Rights, Civil Rights, and Slavery
How people are treated must be a concern of presidents. Whose administration issued the Emancipation Proclamation? The “Trail of Tears”? The Japanese-American internment camps? School desegregation? What problems in the areas of human and civil rights should the president work on today? In what ways are all people created equal?
- Religion
Religion has held great meaning to many Americans and presidents. Recognizing dangers to liberty posed by state religion, the framers of the Constitution guaranteed freedom of religion, clearly separating church and state. Which presidents helped establish separation of church and state? Which Commanders-in-Chief were Quakers? Who was called the Preacher President?
- Assassinations and Near Misses
Find out which four presidents were assassinated, which five presidents survived attempted assassination, and which one fought a duel. In all, eight presidents have died in office. Some presidents had earlier survived military dangers. What were the circumstances of each occurrence? How did each of these events affect our history?

- Guided Tour: One-hour, curriculum-based tours led by a trained guide are available with advance reservations. All educational programs are adaptable into elementary, middle and high school levels. Prior to the students’ visit to Presidents Park, teachers will be provided with informational packets that will include an overview of the program content, learning objective(s), pre-visit materials and post-visit activities. All programs have been correlated to the Virginia Standards of Learning for Social Studies. These programs are reviewed and critiqued by members of the Presidents Park Board of Education and approved by the National Council of Scholars of Presidents Park.
- The Constitution and Bill of Rights
This educational program focuses on the Constitution, the Bill of Rights and the amendments to the Constitution. The tour focuses on the presidents who were in office when selected amendments to the Constitution were ratified.
- Virginia Presidents
Virginia is the “Mother of Presidents”. The program identifies the eight American presidents who were born in Virginia. Two of them signed the Constitution and one authored the Declaration of Independence. The tour explores their lives and the impact they had on the Presidency and the country.
- Civil War to Civil Rights
This program will cover the Civil Rights Movement from the Civil War through the present. Students will explore the presidents who had the most significant impact on the movement.
- Before They Were Presidents
Before being elected as president, the leaders of this country came from a wide array of careers and educational backgrounds. Students will learn about selected presidents as individuals and how they rose to the highest office in the land.
- The Electoral Process
This comprehensive program focuses on the way that Presidents are elected, discussing the Electoral College, how electors are chosen, and constitutional requirements for office. It then shifts to specific elections that have tested Constitutional boundaries or been closely contested, but emphasize the peaceful transfer of power that characterizes the American democratic process.
